20/03 tutorial reflection

after explaining the ideas for my outcome with my tutor, he was quite confident in my ideas and concepts of creating a book about art direction. He appreciated my approach to layout, using a contact sheet style, as well as the book being a sort of version of a swatch book. He was trusting in myself taking this on, as I have created a successful swatch book in a past project.

We looked through he layout which I was creating on In Design and reflected that he enjoyed the uniformity of all the photos being squared, however he thought that using the exact same layout for each of the 'swatches' may become boring and the viewer will eventually not have the patience or interest to analyse them as they flip through the book. we then discussed that I keep the contact sheet style however for each 'swatch' the format varies, this could be the amount of photos, the size and placement.

I agreed with him, as I do want to create a usable book, which can be analysed and studied in terms of art direction, however I also want it to be aesthetically pleasing, which was my initial interest when starting this project: aesthetics. So having this variation in between the swatches will allow for a nice balance between the book being for utility and as and aesthetic page turner.

He was very positive about the progress of my sketch book. something which in this project I have taken I different attitude to. Instead of presenting my work on a normal paper sketch book, I have binder my finding together in-between 2 hardback overs and some rings. This has made my sketchbook for this project far more archival and tactile. I am able to flip through it and feel and analyse textures and materials that I have ben experimenting with.

Moving forward, I will begin to direction a new form of layout for each of the 'swatches' I am going to record to go into this book.

we also talked about my discomfort in reading and analysing, he suggested a few short theories I could read to aid my research towards this project, which I will also embark on.
